The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a domesticated junglefowl species, with attributes of wild species such as the grey and the Ceylon junglefowl that are originally from Southeastern Asia. Rooster or cock is a term for an adult male bird, and a younger male may be called a cockerel. A male that has been castrated is a capon. An adult female bird is called a hen and a sexually immature female is called a pullet.

We had a rooster for a short while, but living in a rural area doesn't mean you don't want other people not to sleep well:) H*ck, even I couldn't sleep with that little one squeaking at every odd hour. We talked him into moving to a farm at the very edge of our village. He loves it there.
Now we have three chickens (and three little ones) in a chicken pen in our garden. The pen is not that large, so it doesn't take up much space/
As for the food: with leftovers you risk infections and vermin when chickens don't eat all and leave some for scavengers. With leftovers you need to clean the pen a lot more. Our chickens are a bit picky as to what they like.
We give them dry chicken food and the occasional leftover. They don't like potato peelings though. It always makes me smile seeing them eat so messy. They paw sand into their food and then start eating. Jummie:) Posted 13 years ago
