Cramer's Eighty-eight (Diaethria clymena marchalii), Santa María, Colombia This is the marchalii sub species of Diaethria clymena, popular name "eighty eight". It looks like I found a zero zero instead, but if you look closely, you can see faint dots appearing inside the circles.     1. They (various species and sub species) seem to be fairly common across South America, so you know what to do :)
      Only recently did I discover there's also dark varieties in the genus:

      1. Yup, one day! Interesting the dark one and also interesting that yours is '98' the main photo '89' and the dark one '80'. Does anyone have a photo with a true '88'??? haha! Posted 8 years ago
        1. Heh, there definitely is a lot variety in how well formed in particular the dots are. The Diaethria anna species seems to be much more clear when you search for it.

"Diaethria clymena" or Cramer's Eighty-eight is a species of butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. It is found from Mexico to Peru and Brazil. It was discovered to science by Pieter Cramer, in a fascicle of "De uitlandsche Kapellen", 1775.
