  2. Thanks! I was really thrilled to come across this bird. It first of all fly away about 15 metres and sat but then soon returned to its perch right in front of me. The location is a pretty tight olive grove with various other trees in a low narrow gully. It's a bit of a tunnel in there. Posted 8 years ago

The tawny frogmouth is a species of frogmouth native to and found throughout the Australian mainland and Tasmania. Tawny frogmouths are big-headed, stocky birds often mistaken for owls due to their nocturnal habits and similar colouring. The tawny frogmouth is sometimes incorrectly referred to as "mopoke", a common name for the southern boobook, whose call is often confused with the tawny frogmouth's.
