A Madagascar West Coast Skink (Trachylepis tandrefana) basking on a log
I photographed several of these skinks in the Anjajavy reserve, only to discover that no matching species was known from this area according to the Glaw & Vences field guide (3rd edition, 2007). Some exchanges with Madagascar herp experts led me to the understanding that the skinks were most likely Trachylepis tandrefana, making my observations a signficant range extension.

Trachylepis tandrefana is a medium-sized skink species known from a few localities in northwestern Madagascar. It is known to occur in tsingy, limestone habitats. It is found on the ground and bases of tree trunks in dry deciduous forests, and also in savanna dominated by satrana palms. This species is less abundant in open grasslands.
