This used to be IDed as the chestnut-crowned laughingthrush. It is shyer and less common than the chestnut-capped laughingthrush in Malaysia.

The Malayan laughingthrush is a species of laughingthrush that was for some time included as a subspecies of the ''Trochalopteron erythrocephalum''. This species is found in the extreme southern Thailand and peninsular Malaysia.
