  1. Stunning find, it sure has a weird appearance. What is confusing is that sometimes one sees fungi that seem to be mutated or in a state of decay. Yet for this species, it seems their normal appearance. Posted 8 years ago
    1. Indeed - this one is growing a bit of black mold or bruising, I think, really fresh ones can be pure white, but the gnarled stem and bumpy cap are quite normal. Posted 8 years ago

''Helvella crispa'', also known as the white saddle, elfin saddle or common helvel, is an ascomycete fungus of the Helvellaceae family. The mushroom is readily identified by its irregularly shaped whitish cap, fluted stem, and fuzzy undersurfaces. It is found in eastern North America and in Europe, near deciduous trees in summer and autumn.
