Cap 5-50 mm; opaque; disc and squamules violet-brown to dark reddish brown, becoming grayish red-brown, fading to dark grayish brown, the background brownish orange to orange-gray; margin becoming eroded and slightly translucent-striate at the edge. Gills seceding; subdistant to distant; white with a fuliginous to dark reddish brown margin that fades to grayish brown with a reddish tint.
