Illioneus Giant Owl, Santa María, Colombia
Opening our Colombia 2016 set with this first photo. This is in Santa María, the eastern Andes of Colombia. Our first path was named Reserva Almenara. This path did not deliver a lot of birds (within photo range), so we occasionally took the opportunity to photograph the great amount of butterflies.
This Illioneus Giant Owl is widespread throughout South America. It can be mistaken for caligo telamonius.

The Dusky Owl-Butterfly is an owl butterfly belonging to the nymphalid family, Morphinae subfamily, tribe Brassolini.
