Zambezi Shark
Bull Sharks - Carcharhinus leucas are known as Zambezi Sharks in Africa. They got the name of Zambezi Shark probably because they have been found in the Zambezi river.
They are known to be able to survives in fresh water and also known swim up river to give birth.
I have dive with many Bull Sharks during Sharks feeding dives in Fiji where it was possible to see them up close and personal. However, in Mozambique, we encountered them in their natural habitat and this was a bit scary. First of all, we see them in the deep waters around 40-45 meters depth, which means we don't have much bottom time and at this depth, we had to be careful of our ascent rate should something unexpected happens. Our dive guides are very experienced with Sharks dives and gave me the assurance that they are looking out for me during the dives. On the contrary of most people, especially non-divers, that Sharks are ferocious animals, this is not the case. This big Sharks can be shy and cautious of divers and when they 'hear' the noise of exhalation, they quickly turn away. So, to get closer shots of them, I had to hold my breath each time I see them swimming towards me and each time I exhaled, the Sharks will scutter away!

The bull shark, "Carcharhinus leucas", also known as Zambezi shark or unofficially known as Zambi in Africa and Nicaragua shark in Nicaragua, is a shark common worldwide in warm, shallow waters along coasts and in rivers. The bull shark is well known for its unpredictable, often aggressive behavior.

And with the depth of 30 meters or deeper, it is likely to be a decompression dive, meaning we will have to do longer safety stop before we surface, otherwise there is a risk of decompression sickness.
Most of the time, we dive up to 20-25 meters with limited bottom time but when if there is a reason to do deeper dives for possible marine encounters, then I will go for it. Of course one has to be more careful with the air consumption as with deeper dives, the air in our scuba tanks will run out faster.
So, this kind of dives are only for the very experienced divers. Posted 9 years ago
