Jersey Tiger Moth In Heverlee, Belgium, summer of 2013, seen in an open garden.
In Dutch they are called Spaanse vlag = Spanish Flag (it makes me wonder because being Spanish as I am I see more ressemblance to the Belgian flag in the colors, but well :-)
1. Isn't that a beautiful moth! :) Above that is almost like a butterfly at daylight due to their habits, it can appear at the night lights, or it can be seen flying at full daylight, its awesome. Athough abundant in certain regions but very located, is classified and protected as a priority species in the B-II Habitats Directive, http://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/legislation/habitatsdirective/index_en.htm
It's a great Lepidoptera, and a great capture as well, 2 in one! :)
    Cheers

    1. Thanks for your nice comments RMFelix! :-) Wow! I did not know about the protection but is indeed not that abundant. I am lucky that some can be seen in the region where I live but I do not see them every year (I hope they are not on decline!). Posted 8 years ago
