Brown Bear (captive) Han-Sur-Lesse Biological reserve, Belgium (2015). Compared to other animals in this reserve the bear has a smaller piece of land and I guess that this is -sad to say- to increase the chances of exhibit. But I think he is quite happy because he has a female partner and they have a pond and waterfall which a you say they enjoy gladly.<br />
Is not that I am often into showing captive animals but I think is worth to include some close ups of some of these otherwise rare to see beauties, in JD. I hope one day to see them in the wild too. In Spain there is bears in the mountains but they are a rare sight. I think the best chance may be in Finland. 1. No need to apologize for captive animals, they are allowed on the site, and as you say they allow for great photography. Posted 8 years ago
    1. Thanks Ferdy, yes, they do. In some zoos I do not like how they enclose them but here in Belgium the zoos and reserves I know do quite a good job with their animals. Most have good pieces of land -the bear here maybe a bit less, but he is still quite Ok with his pond, waterfall and female partner- and are well taken care off so I am happy about that :-) Posted 8 years ago
      1. I think we all agree that preferably we see species live their lives in the wild, but over time I did learn that zoos do good work in education and breeding programs. That said, the world also has its share of terrible zoos where the animals are mistreated. Posted 8 years ago

The grizzly bear is a large population of the brown bear inhabiting North America. Scientists generally do not use the name grizzly bear but call it the North American brown bear.
