Trichalus ampliatus is a species of lycid beetle, or net winged beetle in the family Lycidae. They are soft elytra which is unusual for beetles but gain protection by being toxic or distasteful to potential predators. As a consequence of this survival strategy they are often brightly colored and several other insect species have mimicry patterns, including moths and other beetles.
