Halimeda Decorator Crab - Huenia heraldica
This Halimeda Decorator Crab - Huenia heraldica are usually green in colour and sometimes yellowish, very close to the colour of the Halimeda algae they lives on. Their camouflage and mimicry is quite amazing as they can cut small pieces of the Halimeda corals and then attached it to the pointed tip of its carapace, making them look totally like the Halimeda algae.
Huenia heraldica is a species from Epialtidae family.
Description of male: The carapace elongate triangular in outline, the dorsal surface markedly depressed and flattish. The gastric region has three tubercles placed in a triangle, the base forwards; the cardiac region mounted with a conical tubercle. The antero-lateral border has two lobules, the anterior or hepatic one being usually smaller and very often quite rudimentary, the posterior or branchial one being usually laterally produced.. more
