  2. Males and females both are winged when swarming. I assume a single female was within a ball and the males were attracted to the pheromes. There were several "balls" at the base base of the light tower on Mt Lofty, not often you can get close to this species in such numbers with a camera. Last time I had numbers on the ground I got a sting! (Defense of the nest after the kids woke them up, and I thought I was being careful!) Posted 8 years ago

The inchman is a species of bull ant that is native to Australia. The ants are recorded in the south eastern part of the country, but are most often found in Tasmania. The inchman is the most venomous of the bulldog ants, ranging from about 15 to 25 mm long, but less aggressive than the Jack jumper ant.
