Common Tern with a catch, Biesbosch, Netherlands
I never realized how awesome these birds are before this day. In dutch they are called the "fish thief". They hunt around slow moving rivers like true jet planes, incredibly fast and agile. At times they do a stationary pose in mid-air peeking down into the water for prey. This one is a parent that was extremely active in finding fish for its young.

The common tern is a seabird in the family Laridae. This bird has a circumpolar distribution, its four subspecies breeding in temperate and subarctic regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It is strongly migratory, wintering in coastal tropical and subtropical regions. Breeding adults have light grey upperparts, white to very light grey underparts, a black cap, orange-red legs, and a narrow pointed bill.
