Barnacle geese, Biesbosch, Netherlands
On the rise across Europe since the 1980s, only breeding in the Netherlands as of 1984. A good sign, since they exclusively breed and/or overwinter in bewildered places. They are often living in large colonies which helps the detection of predators, such as the fox.

The Barnacle Goose belongs to the genus "Branta" of black geese, which contains species with largely black plumage, distinguishing them from the grey "Anser" species. Despite its superficial similarity to the Brent Goose, genetic analysis has shown it is an eastern derivative of the Cackling Goose lineage.
