  1. Hi, fairly sure that this is a Calotes versicolor? Posted 7 years ago, modified 7 years ago
    1. I'm quite sure that you're right, Shanelle. But please do explain why you think the ID is wrong. Posted 7 years ago
      1. Firstly, apologies for the ID without an explanation.
If this specimen was found in Wilpattu, then it's unlikely to be C. liolepis since they are found in the wet zones of Sri Lanka. And another marker that distinguished C. liolepis from the other Calotes is that there's a prominent dorsal crest and these spines don't continue as prominently down their back and are downward. These spines on C. versicolor are pointed upward. Also on a superficial level this lizard looks very similar to C. versicolor due to the distinct grey-brown colour and distinct striped radiating from the eyes that I've seen very often in this species.

The oriental garden lizard, also called the eastern garden lizard, Indian garden lizard, common garden lizard, bloodsucker or changeable lizard, is an agamid lizard found widely distributed in indo-Malaya. It has also been introduced in many other parts of the world.
