  1. One of the very few Marsh owls left of the Moroccon population, the only one north of the Sahara. Best seen at dawn where they roost in groups on the ground. Posted 9 years ago
    1. Sorry to hear that, but good job on finding it. I never thought of Morocco as a wildlife country to visit. How was it? Posted 9 years ago
      1. There's a guide who lives nearby who is the go-to guide to see birds in the area.
Well, parts of it been trashed, by overgrazing and such, but there is still a lot to see, from really interesting endemic plants, to a lot of neat birds, a few endemics, and other bizarre localized populations of things normally only found south of the Sahara, though some have been extirpated (they used to have dark chanting goshawks!). Also lots of terrific reptiles, and many endemic butterflies. Plus absolutely lovely, incredibly hospitable people (if you get away from Marrakesh), beautiful, varied scenery, excellent food, and lots of cultural sights. It's super easy to rent a car and get around (I can actually recommend a guy in Fès!), and the roads are quite good. Highly recommend it!

        1. I'm on my way next year! Going on a 'cultural' trip though so will have to look at carpets and leather, ha ha! But will have a week in Marrakesh on our own, so hope to see some things! Posted 8 years ago
          1. You definitely will! Try to go up to Oukaimeden to see the Horned Larks and the Crimson-winged finches! Posted 8 years ago

The marsh owl is a species of owl which is a mainly resident breeder in Africa and Madagascar.

This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, Strigidae, which contains most species of owl. The other grouping is the barn owls, Tytonidae.

Marsh owls nest on the ground on open marshy areas, laying 2-4 eggs amongst tussocks.

It hunts over open country, often by day. Its food is mainly insects, but it will take small mammals, such as rodents,.. more
