They are known to prey on other flies as their main source of food, yet some species (like this one) have evolved to mostly feed on nectar. "Empis tessellata" is a large species of dance fly, in the fly family Empididae. In the United Kingdom, Adults can be seen from April to August, particularly on the folwers of umbellifers.
