Today is unusual ‘creature features’ Day 3! #JungleDragon
To see more wildlife with unique features:
RED FACE
As you can see, the bald uakari (Cacajao calvus) has a very red face. Researchers have found that the redness is caused by a high density of blood vessels near the surface of their skin. This species has especially thin skin, so the redness is prominently pronounced. The reason for the redness is not quite understood, but the theory is that their red faces indicate good health, which is appealing to potential mates. Sickly animals actually develop pale faces, so this theory has merit. A red face = a healthy monkey. And, a healthy monkey = an attractive monkey. {Spotted in Peru by Tarsier}#BaldUakari #Cacajaocalvus
