Double-barred Finch (Taeniopygia bichenovii)
A very active little finch with a white face and dark eyes defined by black lines giving it an "owl-like" look. Two thin black lines were seen across the breast. Face was white and the rest of the body a pale grey with the abdomen, a creamy colour. Wing feathers were speckled. An oval-shaped nest of grass could be seen on the acacia nearby. It had an opening on the side and the birds could be seen darting in and out of this entrance.
Spotted in open farmland.
These finches had a nest on a prickly acacia tree opposite the pepper-corn tree on which they were resting. They were extremely busy flitting from the nest to the grasslands beyond. Bird calls were very sweet and almost entreating ! Also called Bicehno's Finch. Spotted alongside Zebra Finch, Wagtails and Superb Wrens.
The Double-barred Finch is an estrildid finch found in dry savanna, tropical dry grassland and shrubland habitats in northern and eastern Australia. They are sometimes referred to as Bicheno's Finch; and also as Owl Finch, owing to the dark ring of feathers around their faces.
