  1. The beautiful tocororo, Cuba's national bird (it supposedly recalls the colors of the flag...).
    It is a member of a rather distinct genus in the family, with only one other species in Hispaniola. While I find that Asian and American trogons look very much alike, those guys stand out to my eyes. And, best of all, they are incredibly tame, this one was in fact in the garden of our B&B!

The Cuban trogon or tocororo is a species of bird in the Trogonidae family. It is endemic to Cuba, where it is also the national bird. Its natural habitats are dry forests, moist forests, and heavily degraded former forest. The Cuban trogon has multiple names it can go by. In English speaking countries it is commonly known as the Cuban trogon, while in Spanish speaking countries it is referred to as the ''tocororo'' or ''tocoloro''.
