The male is mainly blue-black above and over the throat, with an extensive yellow cap, and is also yellow below, while the female is mainly olive-colored above, with yellow central underparts. The female is dull olive above and yellow below.

The yellow-crowned euphonia is a species of bird in the Fringillidae family.
It is found in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama, and is perhaps the most common euphonia in its range.
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and heavily degraded former forest.
