8-bit Beetle The color pattern of this Carpet Beetle reminds me of a low-resolution digital print, so i call it a 8-bit beetle ;)<br />
The Athrenus species are also called &#039;museum beetles&#039; because they feed on dead insects. They can ruin a (dead) insect collection.<br />
<br />
This beetle is alive and after a few minutes it decided to quit modelling and ran away. It is very small (about 3mm long) so I had to use a macro extension tube (2:1). For reference, the plastic plate the beetle is sitting on is 0,7mm thick. 1. Superb Joost, really like the photo and story! Posted 13 years ago
  2. Joost, that is a nice nickname! Reminds me of the 8bit Atari times of years long past, that is a amazing picture you've taken, a very sharp macro and way magnified. Great detail and sharp to match! Posted 13 years ago
  3. Crazy! This afternoon I found a very small beetle in the living-room. I took a macro of it and thought of uploading to JD... But when processing the photo I realized I had "shot" another 8-bit-beetle. I would have had no idea of what insect that might be if I hadn't seen Joost's photo - now of course I won't upload my little carpet beetle. Hoping to be faster next time... ;-)
    Btw: Nice shot, Joost.

    1. Hey Gernot. What a coincidence we photographed the same bug the same day. Just upload yours anyway, I am curious now ;).

      About identification. I didn't now the name either but did some searching at google images. Typing in something like 'beetle small orange' and then see if any of the images matches my beetle.
      I eventually found a match at http://www.ahw.me/indexkevers.html. I can really recommend visiting this site (dutch). Lots of beetles and even more categories at the homepage. Chances are big you will stumble upon some insects you already photographed.

      1. Thanks for that site and it never ceases to amaze how you are able to identify even the hardest ones. We're at 926 species now, let's make it a 1,000 soon :) Posted 13 years ago
  4. Hey Gernot, just post it man:) Joost, you inspired me greatly with your amazing composition, so I did a few macros and enjoyed the proces inmensely. Posted 13 years ago

The varied carpet beetle is a 3 mm-long beetle belonging to the family Dermestidae. They are a common species, often considered a pest of domestic houses and, particularly, natural history museums, where the larvae may damage natural fibers and can damage carpets, furniture, clothing, and insect collections. "A. verbasci" was also the first insect to be shown to have an annual behavioral rhythm and to date remains a classic example of circannual cycles in animals.
