Wingspan 28-30 mm. The male upperside is all dark blue brown with black spots and some more or less well developed submarginal orange lunules. There may also be some blue spots above the orange lunules on the hindwings as in the blue form caeruleopunctata of the Small Copper. The female has an orange ground colour to the forewings though this may be significantly toned down in some individuals. The undersides have a rather yellowy feel to them with an orange flush on the forewing of the female.<br />

The Sooty Copper is a butterfly of the Lycaenidae family. It is found in Europe. The wingspan is 28–30 millimetres. The butterfly flies from April to September, depending on the location. The larvae feed on ''Rumex acetosa'' and ''Rumex acetosella''.
