  1. Not a species intro, but it really is, since the other photo was taken in a zoo :) Posted 9 years ago
    1. It was probably my favorite bird from Bhutan. And though it's actually quite easy to see, this particular bird felt extra special as it was the first one we saw, and we had to abandon camp not long after seeing it and come down the mountain because of a heavy snowfall. Posted 9 years ago
      1. Yes, I wonder how it survives being so visible? Posted 9 years ago
        1. You would actually be surprised how quickly it vanished in the thick bushes! Though the risks of gaudiness go for most Asian pheasants (at least the males), and of course many others. Posted 9 years ago
  2. Il est magnifique, quelle belle photo. Je connais ça trop bien , on voit un oiseau formidable et au moment precis que vous tournez la bague pour la bonne mise au point il est parti! Posted 9 years ago
  3. From today's Facebook post:

The lovely satyr tragopan (Tragopan satyra) is found in the mountainous areas of the central and eastern Himalayas. They are hardy, gentle birds that feast upon insects, vegetation, and berries. They are classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List because they are affected by hunting, logging, and deforestation throughout their range. {Spotted in Bhutan by JungleDragon moderator, Thibaud Aronson} #JungleDragon

The Satyr Tragopan ''Tragopan satyra'', also known as the Crimson Horned Pheasant, is a pheasant found in the Himalayan reaches of India, Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. They reside in moist oak and rhododendron forests with dense undergrowth and bamboo clumps. They range from 8,000 to 14,000 feet in summer and 6,000 feet in winter. The male Crimson Horned Pheasant is about 70cm long.
