
Black Woodpecker
A male black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) next to its nest. This shy woodpecker is the biggest of the species in Europe. The female was always close, their strong calls echoing through the forest.
In their nest they were having a massive redecoration, constantly hammering.

The Black Woodpecker is a large woodpecker, 45–50 cm long with a 64–84 cm wingspan. Body weight is approximately 300-400 grams on average. It is easily the largest woodpecker in its range. This species is closely related to and fills the same ecological niche in Europe as the Pileated Woodpecker of North America.
