Wedge-rumped storm petrel Galapagos, Ecuador (2005).<br />
This poor petrel knock himself down almost unconscious in our boat the first day we started the tour. We took care of him fow a couple of days and then we released him in an island... I really hope he made it.<br />
You can see the nostrils fused into a small tube on top of the beak. These and other sea birds have this structure to hold nasal glands that remove the excess salt from the water. Also, the storm petrel&#039;s large nasal olfactory bulbs facilitate a keen sense of smell,] and the birds themselves have a distinctive musty aroma which can help researchers to locate breeding colonies. Individual petrels recognise their own body scent and can use it to locate their nest in the dark.<br />
