Really Giant

id: Giant forest scorpion (Heterometrus longimanus)
Also known as Giant blue scorpion
This beauty we found near Kerala forest research institute, Vythiri, Wayanad, Kerala.
Heterometrus genus scorpions are all huge scorpions.
Scorpions are one the animals which are less studied in India.

What a beauty!!!
Based on the elongate chelicerae, this looks like Heterometrus longimanus to me.
I understand H. longimanus to be more common in India but I do not know the range of H. spinnifer, except that it is widespread in Malaysia.
They count bristles on the cephalothorax to identify species and I have the data somewhere on file.

  oh thanks for correcting.. Also am confirming this to be Heterometrus keralensis or not.. I think I should remove this as spinifer. Posted 6 years ago

    I cannot comment on Heterometrus keralensis as I have not seen it.
    I have certainly seen spinnifer which has stockier nippers. Spinnifer indeed looks blue at some angles and when wet. Posted 6 years ago
