I have been sitting on this for about a week and got nowhere with ID.
Adrian saw it on a yacca bu it might have dropped out of the trees above, i wasn't doing its job munching. Of course he pulled me out from under a car to present his find, unfortunately he had picked the leaf together with the caterpillar.
it was 25mm including the bristles.

The saddleback caterpillar, ''Acharia stimulea'' , is the larva of a species of moth native to eastern North America. The species belongs to the family of slug caterpillars, Limacodidae.
