Adrian saw it on a yacca bu it might have dropped out of the trees above, i wasn&#039;t doing its job munching. Of course he pulled me out from under a car to present his find, unfortunately he had picked the leaf together with the caterpillar.<br />

  1. What a beauty. I see a similar caterpillar commonly in Australia called a cupmoth. The larvae have no legs and are called 'slugs'. I get stung often as I am always in foliage but itching is mild and lasts for a few minutes.
Ours come in several species, each with eversible bristles.
Mottled cupmoth (Doratifera vulnerans) This bizarre 'slug' caterpillar bears eight weapons which are bundles of spines normally folded away but everted when the insect is startled. They produce mild irritation to humans when touched. Australia,Doratifera,Doratifera vulnerans,Geotagged,Mottled Cup Moth,Summer

The saddleback caterpillar, ''Acharia stimulea'' , is the larva of a species of moth native to eastern North America. The species belongs to the family of slug caterpillars, Limacodidae.
