Mantis in the grass Got up early one morning to go for a walk in the fields - I'd read the night before that there were 'Green' & 'White' mantis species in Corfu - Thought I would go out looking for them. Something moved by my feet in the grass that was a few feet high - upon closer inspection I found this little beauty pretending to be a blade of grass. 1. Great ground level shot! Any idea what the black on the inside of its front leg is? Posted 9 years ago
1. It is an eyespot.
Attacking position I found this praying mantis in my garden and it was so aggressive! European Mantis,Fall,Geotagged,Italy,Mantis religiosa

1. Just like the one 'Molly' had on her back :)

All grown up My little Molly is all grown up now. She had her final molt 2 days ago. It's hard to believe that she was all squashed in her exoskeleton! She now has wings too!
She's loving the mealworms at the moment - she's got such an amusing personality :) Hard to believe she used to look like this:
2. Cool, is their purpose to distract prey and/or predators? Posted 9 years ago
1. That's right, makes the mantis look like it's part of something bigger, I suppose how certain caterpillars have a back end that looks like it has the eyes of a snake. Posted 9 years ago
1. Thanks, that makes sense. Posted 9 years ago
