Beautiful Carpenter Bee
Taken in Arillas, Corfu. Unfortunately there was a distinct lack of these flying around compared to the same time last year. I did notice one one of my walks that a lot of the bamboo and wood areas where I saw these bees nesting last year had been removed. Such a pity as I think these are stunning. They are by far my favourite bee.

"Xylocopa violacea", the violet carpenter bee, is the common European species of carpenter bee, and one of the largest bees in Europe. It is also native to Asia. Like most members of the genus "Xylocopa", it makes its nests in dead wood. It is not particularly aggressive, and will attack only if forced to.
