Firebush is a beautiful plant that ranges in height from 3 to 6 ft tall (sometimes taller in southern Florida) attractant to both butterflies as well as hummingbirds. They also produce juicy berries which attract small mammals. They thrive in sunny locations as well as shade and can be pruned to control their rapid growth. Might freeze back in severe cold but bounces back easily.
"Hamelia patens" is a large perennial shrub or small tree in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, that is native to the American subtropics and tropics. Its range extends from Florida in the southern United States to as far south as Argentina. Common names include firebush, hummingbird bush, scarlet bush and redhead.
