Zanzibar Whip Coral Shrimp Seen in Cabilao, Philippines (2012). Photo by Mark Bockstael (my husband).
Tiny! only grow up to 1.5cm. They have a prominent pointed projection on hump of carapace. Tint of translucent body and broad bands match black coral hosts Cirrhipathes sp (which in spite of the name, are red). These shrimps are most often seen in pairs, and females are twice as large as males. Habitat: Indo Pacific, Australia, New Caledonia, Japan.
2. In this case my husband's eyes for the picture. I was there too but in that trip I had water coming in my camera case which ruined the camera. Fortunately he also has a camera so we could continue documenting our trip with the species we were seeing. And we also have to credit our dive masters who knew where to find these critters and pointed them at us in most cases :-) Posted 9 years ago
    1. Marta, this is more likely the more common Whip Coral Shrimp - Pontonides unciger.
The Dasycaris zanzibarica has some ridges/sharp humps on the carapace.
