Candy Crab/Soft Coral Crab
Seen in Cabilao, Philippines (2012). Photo by Mark Bockstael (my husband).
To 1.5 cm (5/8 in.). Pinkish white with red line, band and spot markings, covered with sharp, spike-like tubercles. Associates with feed in red soft corals Dendronephthya.
Habitat: Indo West Pacific.
The creature where the cran is located is a soft coral of te genus Dendronephtya, most likely Dendronephtya hemprichi. I will describe this coral in another spotting.
''Hoplophrys'' is a monotypic genus of crab in the family Epialtidae. It contains the single species Hoplophrys oatesi, also known as the candy crab, Oates's soft coral crab, commensal soft coral crab and ''Dendronephthya'' crab.
