Heffernan's Sea Star
Seen in Cabilao, Philippines (2012). Photo by Mark Bockstael (my husband).
A sea star (Ophidiasteridae) to 10 cm (4 in.). Purple with cream colored convex plates scattered along long, thin tapering arms. Five-point central rosette.
Habitat: West Pacific

''Celerina heffernani'', known commonly as the Hefferman's Starfish, is a species of marine echinoderm in the family Ophidiasteridae. The ''Hefferman's Starfish'' is widespread throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific area.
This starfish can be distinguished from ''Fromia monilis'' by a unique range of short spikes lying on both side of the arms groove.
