  1. Stunning composition! But do you see how the eyes are red? It's actually a Red-eyed Dove (Streptopelia semitorquata); the Cape Turtle-Dove has completely black eyes. The two species are extremely hard to tell apart from a distance (the easiest way is to pay attention to the calls, which are very distinctive), but the eyes give it away. Posted 9 years ago

The red-eyed dove is a pigeon which is a widespread resident breeding bird in Africa south of the Sahara. It is a common, if not abundant, species in most habitats other than desert.

This species builds a stick nest in a tree and lays two white eggs. Its flight is quick, with the regular beats and an occasional sharp flick of the wings which are characteristic of pigeons in general.
