Western Tanager - male
While many, if not most of our birds tend to be somewhat drab, these guys break the mold. They are bold and showy, in yellow and orange. This particular fellow gave us a good show. He was busy listening and responding to another male in his territory. In past years I haven't seen them very often, but it seems that this year they are doing quite well. I've seen them on most of my woodland hikes on the east side of the mountains.

The western tanager, is a medium-sized American songbird. Formerly placed in the tanager family, it and other members of its genus are now classified in the cardinal family. The species's plumage and vocalizations are similar to other members of the cardinal family.
