Western Tanager - male While many, if not most of our birds tend to be somewhat drab, these guys break the mold. They are bold and showy, in yellow and orange. This particular fellow gave us a good show. He was busy listening and responding to another male in his territory. In past years I haven&#039;t seen them very often, but it seems that this year they are doing quite well. I&#039;ve seen them on most of my woodland hikes on the east side of the mountains.<br />

  1. Inquisitive looking little guy. I suppose his colour is strong at this time of year. Posted 9 years ago
    1. Indeed - they brighten up during breeding season. He'll probably get even more orange on his head. I think he was listening hard to another male bird. We could hear another one call and he'd challenge. My husband has been recording birdsong (and other sounds) on our hikes recently. When he gets some of them ready I'll start linking them to the photos. Posted 9 years ago
      1. Looking forward to that. Sound is so under-rated in our modern world yet humans have an extraordinary capacity for aural detail. Posted 9 years ago
  2. This bird cheers me up, very exotic looking so far north. Posted 9 years ago

The western tanager, is a medium-sized American songbird. Formerly placed in the tanager family, it and other members of its genus are now classified in the cardinal family. The species's plumage and vocalizations are similar to other members of the cardinal family.
