This puff ball is not yet ripe. The dry spores are yet to develop. These balls look like animal droppings.

  1. (Pisolithus arhizus) was my guess based on similarity to other images online.
    The identification (Pisolithus: marmoratus) was confirmed for me on another site which has some Australian mycology experts. http://www.bowerbird.org.au/observations/64940

Pisolithus marmoratus is a puffball fungi in the Pisolithus genus.
