  1. I've only seen night jars in my life twice, and both times it felt like magic. Love them! Posted 9 years ago
    1. Really Ferdy? I admit that they can be hard to find, but in the evening, scan the sky and you can see them occasionally, I have seen them on 5 continents (not in Europe yet, though). Posted 6 years ago
      1. Good point, Barry. They are not necessarily rare, with "see" I suppose I meant finding them by daytime in clear view. In darkness, spotting them flying, etc is somewhat common. Many also have a pretty specific song. Posted 6 years ago
  2. I think we take these little birds for granted as there are so many around. In Northern Australia the road train drivers have nic named them suicide birds as they fly up off the road at night into the trucks windscreen. Posted 9 years ago
  3. Great photo Back Water Fox, first time of the little known of this species thank you for sharing. Posted 9 years ago

The Australian Owlet-nightjar is a nocturnal bird found in open woodland across Australia and in southern New Guinea. It is colloquially known as "Moth Owl". It is the most common of the owlet-nightjars, and the best known of this secretive family.
