Frittilary - Speyeria sp. oh my&hellip;. I&#039;m afraid they look very much the same to me. I don&#039;t, unfortunately, have any images of the underwing. Could be S. zerene, S. coronis or several others.<br />

  1. My uneducated guess is Speyeria aphrodite, just because I see so many near-identical reference images. Posted 9 years ago
    1. I think that one doesn't make it west of the Rocky Mountains, but there's at least 1/2 a dozen more that to my eye appear identical… http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/sfpnw/issssp/documents2/inv-iile-speyeria-coronis-coronis-field-guide-2013.pdf
Maybe Wildflower can make some sense of them - but I'm afraid I haven't given her enough to work with.

      1. I didn't even check for distribution, sorry. That's one impressive document, a bit above my layman skills. Posted 9 years ago

''Speyeria coronis'', the coronis fritillary, is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family of North America. It is common from Baja California to Washington and east to Colorado and western South Dakota and once reported in Alberta.

This butterfly is mostly orange and yellow coloured with distinct dark-brown bars on the topside. The wing margins are dark with lighter circles then dark crescents. Silvery spots predominate on the yellowish underside.

Wingspan ranges from 60–86 mm.. more
