  1. Wow - you really are the authority on these beetles. Everywhere I look for info (to fill out the fields in the species form) I find you. Posted 9 years ago
    1. Impressive isn't it? Quite similar to your plant and fungi journeys. Repeating one of Martin's comments that are interesting in this context, if you haven't seen it already:

"Ha! Paropsis (Latin = bowl) has 72 species, I've only given you 27(by geotag). Phytophagous beetles are very host specific and plant evolution drives speciation faster than average. Paropsisterna has 122 species, Peltoschema has 95 species. These groups are Australian endemics. I probably have images of half, many are localized and this means targeted travelling if I want to see the rest, many are undetermined because taxonomy is in a big mess for this group. It gets harder now. There is still a little more to come. "

    2. Oh, morpheme. I spend days in the museum checking pinned specimens. Some paropsines (Paropsini tribe is unofficial and includes paropsis, paropsisterna, peltoschema, paropsides and Trachymela) fade and all chance of a positive identification is lost by this means. Type material is held in London, or another european museum, or even lost. Many museum specimens are incorrectly named and original descriptions are inadequate. I selected this group partially because it is undiscovered, so when I find a larval stage, or a foodplant, or anything, it is new information to science. Posted 9 years ago
