Delias belisama belisama When a butterfly first emerges from the chrysalis, the feeding proboscis tube is split in two half ‘C’ sections. So when it emerges, its first job is to zip up its proboscis, to complete the feeding tube. Sometimes this process goes wrong and this is the result.

The butterfly is doomed, unable to feed, destined for a slow death.
Location is Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Alongside a stream and paddy fields.
1. Great observation. Yes, I've seen them zip up, but never a fail. Posted 9 years ago
    1. I have seen a few partial failures, but never anything as this distressing. This was the only time I ever considered stepping on a butterfly.

      1. Yes, I know. I do not think they feel much at all. There are very few nerves. Hopefully they just slow down and drift off. Posted 9 years ago
        1. Yes, that would be nice. BUT, I am ashamed to say that when I was a kid, I discovered the magnifying glass and what it does with the sun's rays. I think you can guess the rest.
