  1. What a beautiful discovery! Found in new territory? Posted 9 years ago
    1. Somewhat new - there are so many microclimates here that you don't really have to go that far to find that there are different things. I wasn't expecting this to be a mushroomy hike, we don't have a super large number of spring species, but there were quite a few out in this area (what it must be like in the fall!). ''Caloscypha'' is a fungal genus in the family Caloscyphaceae . A monotypic genus, it contains the single species ''Caloscypha fulgens'', commonly known as the spring orange peel fungus, the golden cup, or the dazzling cup. It is a cup fungus, typically up to 4 centimetres in diameter, with a bright to pale orange interior and orange; specimens that are old or bruised often have an olive-green discoloration, especially around the edges. In North America, it is usually found on the ground in forest.. more
