Unlimitethhh Bokeh (ode to 'JungleDragon' Ferdy;-)) Wow, it took the snake great length to crawl towards me, subtle moments in grace. Such a fascinating creature! 1. Ferdy, after so many beautiful and amazing pictures of critters and crawlers at the Oliemeulen I went there myself. I had a great time! This first location picture is dedicated to you, for all your great work and inspiration to all of us:)! Posted 13 years ago
    1. Thanks so much, Ludo, I feel honoured.

You've set a high standard with this 1st photo. The lighting is beautiful as is the bokeh, and a lot less noise than in my Oliemeulen pics. Homepage material.

    2. PS: Interesting that somehow I missed this snake specie during my visit! Posted 13 years ago
  2. Hey thanks Ferdy, I am honoured yet again to be on the homepage among amazing ones. And all credits go to you of course! I snapped this one with my prime 50mm 1.8 lens (one of the cheapest Canon lenses but with greatest proven technology, the design is more than 20 years old if I remember correctly) without flash. I did have a very small sturdy tripod which I cold carefully place vertically on the glass with the lens pointing towards the glass. Worked like a charm. This snake is just in front of the crocodiles. Posted 13 years ago
    1. Cool, the F1.8 and tripod explains the awesome quality, not to forget of course the human being operating it :) If you don't mind, please do share these gems at their original resolution (I think you already do), they will make great entries for this list:

      1. Grin, yeah it must be the tripod then:) Though I had some mayor fun pushing the buttons. I had a stiff right arm from holding the camera, really:)
As always I share them in full format (or cropped a little), so 18Mpx or just a tiny bit less. You guessed correctly.
        The story continues!

The Amur Rat Snake, Russian Rat Snake, Korean Rat Snake, Siberian Rat Snake, or Manchurian Black Water Snake exists in two varieties, since taxonomy changes in 2002:

Elaphe schrenki

Elaphe anomala

The northern, darker, most common variety is known to be more fearless, inquisitive & personable that its southern cousin, which is somewhat more nervous & shy.

It is found in the Amur River basin; in eastern Mongolia, southeastern Siberia, northuern Manchuria.. more
