The reason for this dragon’s huge success, is that it is better at flying than all the other dragons, and spends most of its day on the wing. Its flight equipment looks no different to other dragons. I will deal with my theories on flavescens flight abilities in another post.

This dragon appears to fly purely for the joy it brings, and is usually spotted in large clouds of dragons, aimlessly flying around effortlessly.
1. This is one of that species that I wish to find, in a fin lucky day, in portuguese territory. Last year there was a record to Azores islands. It is most probable a close encounter with this beautiful dragonfly! Great capture, cheers* Posted 9 years ago
    1. I have been to Portugal for a two week holiday, to turn my skin red, with immense success and searing pain. So I would have thought that Portugal would be a favorable location to find flavescens. But, having just pulled up Google Earth, I see that The straights of Gibraltar are at a latitude of 36N which is close to their range limit.

The map of Portugal does show that there is fresh water around for breeding, but, if you check out the water running off the Atlas mountains in Morocco, Algiers and Tunisia, it doesn't seem worth the effort of traveling any further north.

It is amazing that the dragon reached the azores, probably assisted by a freak storm. But once there, the temperature and latitude are correct, and there is a plethora of fresh water running from the volcanic mountains and lakes. So the population will thrive and indeed grow. One exceptionally cold spell, and it will all be over.

If you want to see flavescens, you need to cross over and do some stream walks, with adjacent flat fields. When I am done typing here, I will add another image to the series for you, to show what you are missing :)
A Festival of Dragons These dragons are warming up in the first rays of the sun as it comes into the valley. They spent the night hanging from the paddy field produce, amongst a few thousand long jawed spiders and argiope spiders, various mantids.

I am so lucky, across the road from my house, there is a 25m square patch of undeveloped land, over which a swarm of flavescens entertain me all day long, and I don't need to leave my chair :)
"Pantala flavescens", the Globe Skimmer or Wandering Glider, is a wide-ranging dragonfly of the family Libellulidae. This species and "Pantala hymenaea," the "Spot-winged Glider", are the only members of the genus "Pantala" from the subfamily Pantalinae. It was first described by Fabricius in 1798. It is considered to be the most widespread dragonfly on the planet.
