Indian Fig Prickly Pear
The prickly pear cactus was and is a staple in the diets of many indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States and Mexico. While it is now grown throughout the dry regions of southern Europe, it is believed that all species of prickly pear cacti originated in North America where it became a valued source of food and medicine for centuries of people.

"Opuntia ficus-indica" is a species of cactus that has long been a domesticated crop plant important in agricultural economies throughout arid and semiarid parts of the world. It is thought to possibly be native to Mexico.
