Ancient pollard knots of recent times (Ode to Gernot [GGlaeser]) It was a hot day, with only a tiny gale. I still know it well. It was a week ago, at the Venloop 2012 half marathon. In sepia it looks like it was taken a long time ago. Small experiment, hope you like it! (It's better than the original, which was too exposed.) 1. Ludo, I love this! Makes me feel a bit like home, because my place of birth is some 25 km from Venlo - just across the border! And I do love sepia toning anyway ;-) Posted 13 years ago
    1. That is very kind of you, so "specially for you!". It has a homely feeling for me too, I lived in Venlo for a few years when I was young (10ish). Posted 13 years ago
      1. Just realized you re-named this pic - thanks, mate! Posted 13 years ago
  2. Clueless as to what species of Willow this is, there are 350 and all can be knotted:) Posted 13 years ago
    1. Most likely they are white willows or basket willows - these are the two species that are typically cut to that specific form that is so characteristic of this area, the so-called pollard willows... Posted 13 years ago
  3. No problem, it's yours, Gernot, now we both have a smile on our face;) Thanks for helping the Id process! Posted 13 years ago, modified 13 years ago

Salix alba (White Willow) is a species of willow native to Europe and western and central Asia. The name derives from the white tone to the undersides of the leaves.

It is a medium-size to large deciduous tree growing up to 10–30 m tall, with a trunk up to 1 m diameter and an irregular, often-leaning crown. The bark is grey-brown, deeply fissured in older trees. The shoots in the typical species are grey-brown to green-brown. The leaves are paler than most other willows, due to a covering.. more
