Megascolia procer This is a huge wasp of the Scoliidae family. Fortunately I was cured of my fear of wasps and was able to get close to this black beauty. These wasps are non-aggressive and are nothing to fear. They just want to get on with their daily routine.<br />
<br />
You can get an idea of the size from the creeping foxglove plant. Here you can see the wasp standing on a more stable head while it feeds down the bell of the bloom. In the other image, the foxglove is too unstable and will likely break off, so the wasp drills into the base of the bloom from the outside. Many insects adopt this strategy.<br />

Location is Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Alongside a stream and paddy fields.<br />

  1. A wingspan of up to 11.5cm? Bloody hell :) Posted 9 years ago
    1. Apparently it all depends on what food the larvae are fed on. Here, procer is not reaching the published sizes, but with a body length of around 3.5cm, that gives a wing span of around 7cm.

      I have seen a wasp with a body length of 6cm to 7.5cm, but I haven't managed to get close enough for a reasonable photograph. The first time that I saw it, I thought it was a humming bird. Nothing in an ID search.

  2. Jezzz! It is huge, too. In Europe the biggest that we have is another Scolidae Wasp, Megascolia maculata ssp. flavifrons
    Megascolia maculata Megascolia maculata, male (above) and female (below). Hymenoptera,Mammoth wasp,Megascolia maculata flavifrons,apocrita,arthropoda,biodiversity,insects,mamooth wasp,wasps
    They are indeed parasitic wasps, and most beautiful insects they are! Great capture, Dave. Cheers*
