Ligyra tantalus - Bee Fly
This is an impressive member of family Bombyliidae, the bee flies, evolved to impersonate their distant apid cousins.
They have very large eyes, hence good eyesight, making them very difficult to get close enough for a reasonable shot. Also a rare sight, I only get one or two opportunities in a year.
Location is Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Alongside a stream and paddy fields.
Ligyra tantalus is a species of insect in the Bombyliidae family, commonly known as bee flies. It has an orange and brown thorax and a black abdomen with a white ring and four spots on it, although the rearmost two spots can be joined together in some specimens. The wings are purplish-black and swept back from the body when at rest.
